Gov. Linda Lingle has announced that, due to an accounting mistake, the state now faces an additional $44-million shortfall.
The budget blunder occurred when two state departments double-recorded the amount of money coming in from the state's new delinquent taxpayer collection project. "When you operate an organization as large as ours is -- with as many departments and with as many people involved in the accounting of money -- it is certainly something that can happen," said Lingle, of the slip-up. "It is not something you ever want to have happen." Lingle said she is glad the mistake was discovered quickly and that there was a minimum of finger pointing between the two agencies involved -- the State Tax Department and the Department of Accounting and General Services.Source: Accounting Error Boosts State Budget Deficit - Money News Story ...
